About this event
The "Shiranui Sea Fire Festival," held in Shiranuhi-machi, Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a festival steeped in history and romance held in conjunction with viewing the mysterious optical phenomenon "Shiranui" fire that appears at high tide on the 1st day of the 8th lunar month. This festival inherits the legend of "Shiranui," visible only for limited hours each year. At the venue, Matsuai New Port, approximately 1,800 marine fireworks are launched against the silhouette of the Eio Tsurugi Shrine torii gate, decorating the night of the Shiranui Sea in a mystical and romantic way. In addition to the fireworks display, there are many highlights such as a torchlight procession, stage performances, and an exciting lottery. The festival runs from 17:00 to 20:30, with Shiranui viewing continuing until 23:30. The fireworks launch begins at 20:30. In case of stormy weather, only the fireworks display may be postponed to the following day.
