Japanese name:風鎮祭
📅 Fri, Aug 21, 2026 - Sat, Aug 22, 2026
About this event
Fuchinsai is a traditional festival with over 270 years of history, serving as a summer hallmark of Takamori Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. Praying for the calming of winds and bountiful harvests, this festival is counted among the "Three Foolish/Crazy Festivals of Higo" (Higo no San-baka Sawagi). Highlights include the "Yama-hiki," where unique floats crafted from everyday household items parade through the town, and "Takamori Niwaka," featuring impromptu comedic sketches. "Takamori Niwaka" has been selected as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property Requiring Measures such as Record Making by the national government, as well as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kumamoto Prefecture. In addition, there will be mass community dances, hand dances that children can join, and a fireworks display lighting up the summer night sky. A service where attendees can check the real-time location of the mobile Niwaka stage by scanning a QR code will also be provided.
