43rd Saganoseki Sea Bream Fishing Dance Festival

About this event

A traditional festival featuring heroic dancing performed to the tune of "Saganoseki no Tai-tsuri Uta" (Saganoseki Sea Bream Fishing Song), passed down among Saganoseki fishermen since the Genroku era. The dance praying for a bountiful catch in single-hook fishing was choreographed on the occasion of the Oita National Sports Festival in 1966 (Showa 41), and is performed annually with the spirited chant "Tai jai, Tai jai." Prior to the festival, the "All-Japan Saganoseki Sea Bream Fishing Song Contest" and the "WOC Big Catch Rowing Contest" competing in traditional wooden oar boats (Japanese-style boats) will also be held. While feeling the cool sea breeze, visitors can enjoy the passionate dancing and beautiful seaside scenery. Since last year, the venue returned to the area around Saganoseki Fishing Port, sharing the same venue with the related event "Big Catch Rowing Contest." From 11:00, events such as the "Rowing Contest," "Food and Drink Stalls," "Seaside Marche," and "Barehand Fish Catching Contest" are held successively, making it the largest festival in Saganoseki to enjoy throughout the day. In the main event, free dance sessions welcoming walk-in participants are also held, creating an end-of-summer seaside event where local residents, former residents of Saganoseki, and tourists alike can feel nostalgia and familiarity. This year, the newly introduced "Sea Friends Interaction Plaza" also begins, offering enjoyable content for visitors on the day.
