About this event

The Usuki Ou no Ji Fire Festival, a traditional event for warding off fire that has continued for nearly 300 years in the Mochizuki district, will be held. On the hillside of Mt. Tateishi, 51 holes measuring 1.5 meters square are dug in the shape of the kanji character 'Ou' (king), filled with wheat straw, and ignited all at once. The red flames blazing vigorously against the night sky are majestic and fitting for the 'king' character, cherished by Usuki citizens as an autumn seasonal tradition. This fire festival is a traditional event to pray for fire prevention and a bountiful harvest, serving as an important locally rooted event.
