About this event

The "Oita Traditional Performing Arts Festival," bringing together representative traditional performing arts from across Oita Prefecture, will be held in Bungotakada City. At the festival, four groups known as the "Four Companies"—Bungotakada City's "Kusachi Odori," Oita City's "Tsurusaki Odori," Saganoseki's "Seki no Tai-tsuri Uta / Odori," and Tsukumi City's "Tsukumi Sensu Odori"—along with Bungotakada City's "Children's Kusachi Odori" and "Takada Yanso," will perform graceful dances rich in the distinctive characteristics of each region. "Kusachi Odori," with a history of over 300 years, is characterized by its transition from gentle female dances in the first half to vigorous male dances in the second half. "Tsurusaki Odori," boasting a history of over 450 years, features two contrasting appeals: supple, elegant dancing and dancing set to lively musical accompaniment. "Seki no Tai-tsuri Uta / Odori" is a dance praying for a bountiful catch, performed to songs handed down among fishermen. "Tsukumi Sensu Odori," passed down from about 450 years ago, is characterized by the contrast between the elegance of dancing with beautiful folding fans and the heroic depiction of warfare.
