Held monthly in Shonai Town, Yufu City—the home of Kagura—the "Shonai Kagura Regular Performance" offers a rare opportunity to experience up close the traditional performing art of Shonai Kagura, which features two schools, the Miyama style and the Inuyama style, handed down since the late Edo period. Characterized by heroic and humorous dances and powerful taiko drumming, visitors can fully experience the charm of village kagura (sato-kagura) passed down through the region. From May to October, local kagura troupes take turns hosting monthly performances, attracting many kagura fans from both within and outside the prefecture. The dynamic rhythm of the festival music (ohayashi) and dances performed in glittering costumes captivate spectators. Daily practice, performances, and ritual offerings are carried out while passing down these traditional dances to the next generation.
