[2026] Taihei Odori Honmachi-gumi Preservation Society Autumn Regular Performance

This is the autumn regular performance presented by the Taihei Odori Honmachi-gumi Preservation Society (Kame-gumi), showcasing 'Taihei Odori', a traditional performing art handed down in Nichinan City. Bon Odori dances were actively performed in Obi starting around the beginning of the Genroku era, and Taihei Odori has been danced by townspeople as a local folk dance passed down since the Edo period. In Hoei 4 (1707), to celebrate reconciliation with the Satsuma Domain, the Obi Domain at the time granted permission to samurai families to dance as well, continuing a rare practice where samurai and townspeople danced together in 'Taihei Odori'. Dancers appear in dapper Genroku-era attire, their faces wrapped under folded woven hats tied with large red cords, dressed in kinagashi robes with long swords worn low at their hips and inro cases hanging from their waists. The dance is characterized by an elegance modeled after the eighteen martial arts and the resolute spirit of samurai warriors. Taihei Odori consists of two styles: the Tsuru-gumi of Imamachi and the Kame-gumi of Honmachi-gumi, each differing in stance posture heights and song lyrics. The Kame-gumi song of Honmachi-gumi is a serene melody praising the first feudal lord, Lord Suketake Ito. Designated as a Miyazaki Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Property in Showa 37 (1962), it has been passed down as a traditional performing art representing Nichinan. At this performance, you can appreciate this graceful and powerful dance up close, backed by its rich history and tradition.
