This is Southern Kyushu's largest festival, where approximately 17,000 dancers parade and dance along to representative Kagoshima folk songs including 'Ohara-bushi,' 'Kagoshima Hanya-bushi,' and 'Shibuya Ondo.' Continuing since 1949 (Showa 24), this historic festival fills the entire Tenmonkan area with excitement. The 'Night Festival' features a mass dance (so-odori) and an Ogojo Taiko drum contest, while the 'Main Festival' showcases a diverse array of attractions including the mass dance, Ogojo Taiko contest, marching bands, and the 'Ohara 21' dance. The mass dance by dance troupes dressed in colorful costumes is truly breathtaking. To heighten the festive mood, illuminated flower trams (Hana Densha) operate until the day before. 'Ogojo' means 'woman' in Kagoshima dialect, and the drum performances by brave and beautiful Satsuma women are a must-see. Traditional performing arts presentations are scheduled at Centerrace Square, and PR booths for festival exchange partner cities and organizations will be set up on the day of the Main Festival.
