About this event
"Shibasashi" is a traditional festival passed down in Yamato Village, Kagoshima Prefecture, conducted as a ritual to ward off evil spirits. It is held on the Day of the Water / Mizunoe, the 7th day counted from Arasetsu (around November in the solar calendar), and is also called the festival of the earth. On this day, placing pampas grass (susuki) at the four corners of the property is believed to prevent evil spirits from entering the home and grounds. In addition, in settlements such as Odana, Oganeku, and Imazato, the Hachigatsu Odori (August Dance) is still held in the evening to this day, where local residents gather to perform traditional dances. This festival serves as an important occasion to pray for local safety and bountiful harvests while deepening community bonds.
