Hiraniwa Bullfighting Tournament - Autumn Foliage Tournament (Momiji Basho)

Japanese name:平庭闘牛大会もみじ場所

📅 Sun, Oct 18, 2026

📍 Kuji, Iwate

About this event

This is the only bullfighting tournament in the Tohoku region, held at a dedicated bullfighting arena in the Hiraniwa Plateau. In the Kuji area, a shorthorn breed called 'Nambu Cow' has been raised since ancient times, transporting salt produced in coastal areas to inland areas during the Edo period. The origin of bullfighting is said to have started by locking horns to determine the lead bull (Wagasa). The sight of Yokozuna-class bulls weighing over 1 ton locking horns is truly powerful, and the movements of the Seko handlers pulling the bulls' ropes are also a highlight. The venue is lively with a lottery draw where you can win luxurious prizes. In addition to May (Wakaba Basho), which is open to the public for free as a practice session for young bulls, paid tournaments are held in June (Tsutsuji Basho), September (Shirakaba Basho), and October (Momiji Basho). For the Momiji Basho, same-day tickets are 2,000 yen, advance tickets are 1,500 yen, and admission is free for junior high school students and under. Advance tickets can be purchased from one month prior to the tournament date at Hiraniwa Sanso and the Kuji City Tourism and Local Products Association, and telephone reservations are also accepted at any time.
