Akiu Great Falls, located in Otaki, Baba, Akiu-machi, Taihaku Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, will welcome the autumn foliage season in 2026. The powerful waterfall, measuring 6 meters wide and 55 meters high, is known as one of the prefecture's most prominent waterfalls. Trees such as Japanese maple, maple, and oak surrounding it change color, creating a beautiful scenery contrasting with the rocky terrain. From the walking trail that allows visitors to descend near the basin of the waterfall, you can feel the powerful water spray up close and enjoy the trees dyed in vivid red, yellow, and orange during the autumn foliage season. The best time to view the autumn leaves is usually from late October to early November, though it may vary depending on weather conditions. Admission is free. For access, take the Sendai City Bus (bound for Futakuchi or Nojiricho Kita) from JR Ayashi Station, get off at the Akiu Otaki bus stop, and walk for about 5 minutes. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays only, you can also take the Miyagi Kotsu Bus (bound for Akiu Otaki) from JR Sendai Station and get off at the final stop. By car, it is about 45 minutes from the Sendai-Miyagi IC on the Tohoku Expressway.
