About this event

The "2026 21st Shiroishi Castle Town Kimono Festival," held across the central city area of Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture with the aim of preserving kimono culture town-wide, will take place over 3 days. The venues are Sumairu Hiroba, Sumaru Yashiki, and the central city area. At Sumaru Yashiki, a tatami-room kimono and fabric scrap market and an exhibition and sale of antique cloth crafts and upcycled kimono works will be held. In addition, a full kimono rental set is available for 3,000 yen (with free dressing service), and hifu vest rentals for young girls are available for 2,000 yen. There will also be exhibitions such as paper robes worn during the Todaiji Omizutori ceremony made using Shiroishi Washi paper. At Sumairu Hiroba, a tent kimono and fabric scrap market will be held, with daily fashion shows by participants dressed in kimono. The bride's procession, one of the festival's highlights, will take place on Saturday, October 17; following the sake barrel opening (kagami-biraki) and red-and-white rice cake toss, the bride, groom, matchmakers, and general participants in kimono will parade through the town with bowed paper lanterns (yumihari chochin), willow casks (yanagidaru), and long chests (nagamochi). Throughout the period, visitors can also enjoy live performances including Tsugaru shamisen, rokyoku narrative singing, and piano-accompanied singing. Those who arrive wearing a kimono will receive a 500-yen gift voucher usable at participating shops. Furthermore, participants in the kimono fashion show will receive a gift of Shiroishi Umen noodles. In the rest area, matcha green tea, coffee & bagels, and home-roasted coffee will also be offered.
