Kurihara Manyo Festival
Japanese name:くりはら万葉祭
📅 Sat, Oct 3, 2026 - Sun, Oct 4, 2026
About this event
Initiated in the aftermath of the 2008 Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake, the "Kurihara Manyo Festival" is an event aimed at returning to "prayer" and "festivals" in modern times as we face "destruction" such as natural threats and social division. It is themed around soil and fire that sustain life, Jomon earthenware bearing traces of prayer left by Jomon people, traditionally passed down performing arts, and food resulting from people's hands and prayers. The admission fee follows the "Give Me Vegetable" format where attendees bring ingredients; chefs cook the contributed ingredients as impromptu art and share the meal with all participants. This provides an opportunity to experience from food the unchanged ancient truth that "to live is to eat" and the bounty of Tohoku's nature-rich land. Just like the ancient people who coexisted with nature, building culture through repeated destruction and creation, this is an annual festival to pray and contemplate future ways of living while coexisting with nature and connecting cultures. Various events will be held, including Jomon pottery making workshops, open-air kiln firing, dedications of traditional performing arts, and live performances.
