Yubikan Summer Special Exhibition "Travels in the Edo Period"
Japanese name:有備館夏季企画展「江戸の旅」
📅 Wed, Jul 15, 2026 - Sun, Sep 13, 2026
About this event
Travel during the Edo period began with the development of major highway networks. As sankin-kotai processions traveled these roads, along with peddlers and religious pilgrims journeying across long distances, the number of commoners traveling for hot spring cures and shrine pilgrimages gradually increased. This exhibition introduces records of journeys by a variety of people, ranging from Matsuo Basho's "Oku no Hosomichi" (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) to mountain hunters (yamadachi ryoshi) of the late Edo period and journeys to Hokkaido during the Meiji Restoration era.
