Japanese name:本荘八幡神社祭典・本荘大名行列2026
📅 Sat, Sep 19, 2026 - Sun, Sep 20, 2026
About this event
This is a festival of Honjo Hachiman Shrine, which successive feudal lords of the Honjo Domain worshipped. The Hiyakimachi Shishi-odori (Lion Dance), a prefecture-designated intangible folk cultural property, is also dedicated, parading through the town to perform dances at homes to ward off evil spirits. The Daimyo Procession is handed down from the sankin-kotai (alternate attendance) of the domain lord, led by two yakko carrying hasamibako (luggage boxes), followed by spears, small feather poles, large feather poles, neriko attendants, sanmon-yakko, and the domain lord. Following them pass the Hiyakimachi Shishi-odori praying for sound health, miko (shrine maidens), and festival floats. It is a lively and cheerful procession without formality, overflowing with vibrancy and smiles, in which citizens and children in happi coats participate. Children riding toy-like floats and beating drums can also be seen.
