About this event
Held in Obanazawa City, the birthplace of the Hanagasa Dance, the "Obanazawa Hanagasa Festival" is a grand event that marks the finale of the prefecture's summer festivals. It holds a history of once being considered one of the "Three Great Festivals of Tohoku" during the Edo period, and that tradition continues to be passed down unbroken today. At the festival, over 2,500 dancers perform dynamic and splendid traditional dances, painting the entire town in Hanagasa colors. On the first day, traditional processions featuring portable shrines (mikoshi) and musical floats (hayashi yatai) parade through the town, and on the second day, a grand Hanagasa Dance parade is held, featuring heroic dances where straw hats are spun dynamically. At the event venue, visitors can also enjoy taiko drum performances, Hanagasa dance showcases, performer shows, and local specialty goods corners.
