About this event
Commemorating the 201st anniversary of the death of master swordsmith Suishinshi Masahide, who was active in the late Edo period and made his mark on Japanese sword history as the "Father of Shinshinto (New-New Swords)," the "Swordsmith Suishinshi Masahide Birthplace Monument Unveiling Ceremony" will be held in Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture, along with the memorial service "Masahide-ki 201" at Eiyun-ji Temple, a related temple. The monument is the first-ever attempt at Masahide's birthplace, made using the rare stone "Kanayama Mikage" and erected in a beautifully landscaped space. The unveiling ceremony will be held starting at 10:30 AM in Motonakayama, Nanyo City, and is open to the public. From 2:30 PM, the 201st death anniversary memorial service will be held at Eiyun-ji Temple, featuring a talk by a leading researcher of the Yonezawa Domain and historical exchange. Following the memorial service, the "Gathering to Honor His Life and Virtues and Commemorate His Death Anniversary" will be held, sharing Masahide's achievements over a memorial meal. A free microbus will also operate from JR Akayu Station.
