About this event
Under the majestic scenery of Mount Gassan, the Gassan Ryujin Marathon is held against the backdrop of the Tachiyazawagawa River, selected as one of Heisei's 100 Exquisite Waters, and the historic village of Kiyokawa. Runners gather from all over Japan for this tournament themed around 'Satisfied by running, full from eating,' allowing participants to fully savor the autumn flavors of Shonai. Various race categories are available including half marathon (21.0975km), 10km, 5km, 3km, lower elementary school grades (1.2km), and parent-child pair (1.2km), enabling participation across a wide range of ages from high school students to seniors aged 60 and above. Participants will receive a Shonai Town specialty product set and an event exclusive towel, and overall winners of the half marathon and 10km will be awarded Tsuyahime rice as a supplementary prize. There is a railroad crossing on the course; if the barrier is down, runners must stop, and that waiting time is included in the recorded official time. On the day of the race, services such as freshly harvested rice onigiri, Shonai-style imoni (taro and meat soup), and autumn fruits are provided, and sightseeing spots such as Tsukinosa Onsen Kita-Gassanso and the Kiyokawa Hachiro Memorial Museum can also be enjoyed. Athletes Keita Shitara and Yuta Shitara are also featured as guest and invited runners.
