The first large-scale solo museum exhibition of painter Yoko Matsumoto, 'Yoko Matsumoto: The Day I Saw the Evening Star,' is held at the Iwaki City Art Museum. Born in Tokyo, Yoko Matsumoto pursued abstract expression with bright colors while studying at Tokyo University of the Arts and garnered immediate attention after graduating. After moving to the United States in 1967 and encountering acrylic paints and raw canvas, she explored unique expressions using these materials, which had not yet become widespread in Japan. Later, she gained high acclaim for her large-scale paintings featuring pink as the dominant tone, which became her signature. In the late 1990s, she returned to oil painting, and in the 2000s, she developed works centered on green tones. Currently, she is working on new paintings dominated by black and blue. This exhibition introduces Yoko Matsumoto's 65-year artistic career—during which she continually pursued a grand expanse of expression while evolving her colors and techniques—through approximately 40 works ranging from her early pieces in the 1950s to her latest creations in 2026. The collection of works, painted with vivid colors and powerful brushstrokes, will leave a deep impression on viewers.
