Komatsu Shrine Autumn Annual Festival

About this event

The Autumn Annual Festival is held every year in late October at Komatsu Shrine, enshrined in Tokowa-machi, Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture. During this annual festival, lively parades featuring Tengu, Sanbiki Shishi (Three Lions), Naga Shishi (Long Lion), and children's mikoshi (portable shrines) proceed through the local area. Komatsu Shrine is an ancient shrine said to have been founded by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro after praying to Gion Shrine during his subjugation of barbarian forces to express gratitude for divine protection, and it is also known as an Engishiki-listed shrine. Dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, it has been cherished and passed down as a locally rooted traditional event. In particular, the Sanbiki Shishi-mai (Three Lions Dance), said to originate in Meitoku 3 (1392), had been temporarily suspended but was revived starting with the 2010 (Heisei 22) Komatsu Shrine Autumn Annual Festival, with a dedication performance lasting about 25 minutes. This festival is a valuable opportunity to experience local history and culture.
