Mito International Music Festival 2026
Japanese name:水戸国際音楽祭2026
📅 Fri, Oct 16, 2026 - Sun, Oct 25, 2026
About this event
Based on the concept of "fusing music and tourism," this is an international music festival held across Mito City and the central region of Ibaraki Prefecture. Centered around concerts by artists active both in Japan and abroad, the festival presents a program where diverse genres intersect, including traditional music, contemporary music, and performing arts. It is a new celebration of culture and music for locals and visitors to enjoy together. Beyond attending concerts, visitors can encounter music while exploring the town and experiencing sounds within local culture and nature, offering a one-of-a-kind artistic experience. As this year marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of internationally acclaimed composer Toru Takemitsu, the Director's Program will actively feature his works in tribute. Additionally, masterclasses providing direct instruction from professional musicians and workshops to practically learn the structure and acoustics of instruments such as gagaku and shakuhachi will be held. At the Festival Market, music enthusiasts from within and outside the region will give voluntary performances to enliven the music festival. Mito International Music Festival 2026 will unfold across five areas in central Ibaraki (Mito, Kasama, Oarai, Hitachinaka, and Naka), using shrines, gardens, seaside locations, and historic architecture as venues. By staying and touring various sites, you can enjoy a program that integrates music with regional experiences. The opening concert, titled "In Memory of Toru Takemitsu," commemorates the 30th anniversary of his passing by highlighting his music and philosophy, bringing together leading Japanese and international artists in contemporary music performance. In addition, the Kairakuen outdoor performance "Garden of Star Paths and Soundscapes" allows visitors to move through the magical nocturnal nature of Kairakuen while encountering different music at various spots, bringing the entire garden to life as a unified musical work.
