About this event
Held as the 3rd installment of the "THE HEADLINERS" series by the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum highlighting currently trending ceramic artists, the special exhibition "THE HEADLINERS 2026 - The Era of Kyun-hatsuryoku" brings together unique works by 14 artists selected from across Japan. Diverse ceramic expressions resonate together—including figures of fictional animals, giant objects, and vessels through which light randomly filters—allowing visitors to fully experience the appeal of contemporary ceramic art. In an era overflowing with information on social media and elsewhere, "kyun-hatsuryoku" (the ability to discover "likes" and heart-fluttering excitement with a lighthearted sensibility) is gaining importance, and this exhibition offers an experience of encountering contemporary ceramic art at a museum and finding that excitement. The participating artists include innovative creators such as those presenting floral works crafted using the "tsuchibasami" (clay scissors) technique of cutting clay with scissors, and Bizen ware works featuring a beautiful harmony of white and red. During the exhibition period, a variety of related events will be held to help visitors learn more about the artists and their works, including artist talks, workshops, gallery talks by the curator in charge, and rakugo storytelling performances. In addition, as "Presents Day" sponsored by operational supporter companies, all exhibitions can be viewed free of charge on select dates. This exhibition can be called an annual ceramic art festival where visitors can witness the "now" of contemporary ceramic art.
