Nijurokuya-son (Jofuku-ji Temple)

Held at Jofuku-ji Temple in Naka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, "Nijurokuya-son" is a festival affectionately known locally as "Rokoya-san." Held on the 26th and 27th days of the 9th month of the lunar calendar, a grand memorial service is held in gratitude to Ryoyo Shonin (also known as Shogei Shonin, one of the Six Great Patriarchs of Jodo Buddhism), who played a major role in the revival of Jofuku-ji Temple. Today, he is also revered as a deity of learning, attracting many worshippers. The festival originates from the anniversary of Ryoyo Shonin's death on the 27th day of the 9th month of the lunar calendar; because many people visited on the 26th and 27th, it is also referred to as "Nijurokuya-san." In addition to the memorial services held during the festival period, the treasure hall is opened to the public, and the prefecture-designated cultural property "Nehan-zu" (Nirvana painting), which completed a three-year restoration, may also be exhibited.
