About this event
Held on Sunday, September 13, 2026, in Namegata City, Ibaraki Prefecture, the "21st Namegata Shinsengumi Festival" is an event in Namegata City—the birthplace of Kamo Serizawa, the first chief commander of the Shinsengumi—where visitors can closely experience the history and allure of the Shinsengumi. The morning session will feature the Kamo Memorial Service (memorial service for Kamo Serizawa, Jusuke Hirama, and Oume) starting at 10:00 at Hogen-ji Temple, followed by sword fighting demonstrations at sites associated with the Shinsengumi. The afternoon session begins at 13:00 with a departure ceremony in the main hall of Namegata City Tamatsukuri Public Hall, featuring dynamic sword fighting demonstrations by the Shinsengumi Takinogawa Troupe and the Tate Roshi-gumi, a Shinsengumi rock-paper-scissors tournament, a show themed around Kamo Serizawa's lover Oume-san, and a Shinsengumi theatrical performance "Otonari mo Namegata-san" staged by the civic theater group Tamatsukuri-za. It is a full day to thoroughly enjoy the world of the Shinsengumi through sword fighting and theater.
