About this event

At Horyu-ji Temple, the Donryu Shonin Grand Festival is held every September to commemorate the high virtues of Donryu Shonin, the 4th chief priest. Even today, this festival is bustling with worshipers praying for child-rearing blessings. Horyu-ji Temple is a branch temple of Kyoto Hyakumanben Daihonzan Chion-in, founded in 1523 (Daiei 3) by Yasutsuna Sano, the lord of Karasawa Castle. Although it was later destroyed by fire during warfare, it was relocated and rebuilt at its current location in 1559 (Keicho 4). The principal image is Amida Nyorai, and the 14th Sho Kanzeon Bosatsu of Sano Bando is also enshrined. In the temple precincts, a cast copper seated statue of Amida Nyorai, designated as an Important Cultural Property by Sano City, is also enshrined, making it a place where history and culture can be experienced.
