The 114th Mashiko Autumn Pottery Fair

The "114th Mashiko Autumn Pottery Fair" held in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture, is the largest event in Mashiko Town and bustles with many visitors every year. Continuing since 1966, this pottery fair is typically held in early November during autumn. Centered around the Jonaizaka and Sayado districts, venues are set up in various locations throughout Mashiko Town. In addition to approximately 50 retail shops, around 600 tents line the streets, selling a wide variety of works ranging from traditional Mashiko ware to daily items such as cups and plates, as well as fine art pieces. The appeal of the tents is the chance to enjoy conversing directly with up-and-coming ceramic artists and kiln craftspeople. In addition to pottery, local agricultural produce and specialty goods are also sold, drawing a combined turnout of approximately 600,000 people across the spring and autumn fairs.
