About this event
The Isemachi Gion Festival is a traditional festival held in Isemachi, Nakanojo Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture. It carries two meanings: relieving the fatigue from six months of agricultural labor to give thanks for bountiful blessings, and faith in Gozu Tenno to pray for warding off plagues during periods prone to infectious diseases. During the festival, a section of National Route 145 becomes a pedestrian zone and is closed to vehicular traffic. Highlights of the festival include performances of traditional performing arts such as the Thousand-Person Dance (Sennin Odori) and Yagibushi, attracting bustling crowds. It is typically held on the first Saturday and Sunday of September, and is scheduled for Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6 in 2026.
