The "Grand Kengyo Hanawa Hokinoichi Virtue Memorial Festival" will be held to honor the virtue and achievements of Hanawa Hokinoichi, a prominent figure celebrated by Honjo City. Hanawa Hokinoichi was an Edo-period National Learning (Kokugaku) scholar who, despite being blind, devoted himself to the development of Kokugaku under the motto "For the world, for future generations," achieving monumental feats such as compiling the "Gunsho Ruiju" and establishing the Wagaku Kodansho (Institute for Japanese Studies). At this memorial festival, held every year on September 12, the anniversary of his death, chrysanthemum flowers are offered before his portrait to remember his great deeds. In addition, learning presentations by local elementary and junior high school students will take place, where local children present what they have learned about Hanawa Hokinoichi's achievements. Non-members can also participate, and anyone is welcome to attend. Flower offerings by all attendees, an essay reading by a representative 1st-year student of Honjo City Honjo Higashi Junior High School, and learning presentations by representative 6th-year students from Honjo City Fujita Elementary School and Honjo City Kitaizumi Elementary School are scheduled. The presentations are expected to start around 15:00, after the flower offering concludes.
