Seki no Shishimai (Lion Dance of Seki), a traditional folk event handed down in Misato Town, Saitama Prefecture, is a town-designated tangible cultural property. Its origin is said to date back about 270 years to the mid-Edo period during the Kyoho era, when a person from Sagami Province arrived in this area and taught the lion dance choreography, flute, drums, and vocal chants. Today, local junior high school students from Seki carry on the tradition and showcase the results of their daily practice during the grand festival in October. This lion dance is dedicated and performed in front of the shrine during the autumn grand festival of Seki's Kodama Shrine. Originating about 290 years ago in the Kyoho era (Edo period) when a person from Sagami Province visited and introduced it, it is a regional cultural heritage with a long history.
