Rekihaku Visual Forum 20: Ainu Dance and Its Representation at Expositions

This forum will screen documentary footage of the Ainu dance performance presented at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, and delve deeply into its representation. The relationship between the Ainu people and expositions spans 150 years, transcending the mere framework of 'objects to be exhibited' and transforming with the times. Through a diverse array of materials such as crafts, photographs, postcards, letters, costumes, and video footage, this event focuses on individual experiences, thoughts, and intricately intertwined relationships. In particular, it examines what expositions meant for the Ainu people from the perspectives of personal histories and relationships. It will also touch upon the transition of representations of Ainu culture since the Expo and the diversification of modern expressions, exploring what cultural showcase venues bring to participants.
