Katsuura Big Catch Festival (Katsuura Tairyo Matsuri)

This autumn festival of the Katsuura district spans 4 days. Portable shrines (mikoshi) from each district parade with powerful chants and brave appearances. Highlights also include the parade of festival floats (yatai and dashi) crafted by master artisans of the late Edo period, as well as competitive festival music performances (ohayashi). On the final day, the "Mikoshi no Funawatashi" (boat-to-boat transfer of the portable shrine) takes place at Katsuura Fishing Port. This is a traditional ritual symbolizing the bravery of fishermen, passed down through generations as a festival to pray for the prosperity of the fishing town and an abundant catch.
