About this event
In Abiko, where the literary figures of the Shirakaba-ha (White Birch School) once established a hub for culture and art, this project connects their footsteps with contemporary young artists to create new stories and values while fostering hope for the future. At "Shirakaba Art Festival ABIKO 2026," special film screenings of "Tokyo Story" and "A Dark Night's Passing" (An'ya Koro) will be held. In particular, viewing these films projected from rare 35mm film prints, which are seldom screened in modern times, will be a precious experience. "Tokyo Story," directed by Yasujiro Ozu, is a masterpiece in Japanese cinematic history that quietly depicts family ties and the transitions of life. After the screening, a mini talk by Yu Yamada, the grandchild of Naoya Shiga, and stylist Rina Yajima is scheduled. Meanwhile, "A Dark Night's Passing," screened in Abiko—a place with deep ties to Naoya Shiga—is a black-and-white film directed by Shiro Toyoda and starring Ryo Ikebe and Fujiko Yamamoto, which will also be screened from a rare 35mm film print. After the screening, a mini talk will be held featuring Naoya Shiga's grandchild Yu Yamada and cultural director Makiko Nonaka. Through these film screenings, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the history and culture of Abiko and discover new artistic charms.
