About this event
Celebrating its 10th anniversary in November 2026, The Sumida Hokusai Museum will hold the special exhibition "The Best of The Sumida Hokusai Museum - Picture Scroll of Both Banks of the Sumida River and Masterpieces" to commemorate this milestone. In addition to classic masterpieces previously displayed, this exhibition carefully selects and presents highlights from the museum's proud collection, including previously unreleased works and newly acquired pieces. Through diverse works by Katsushika Hokusai and his disciples, it provides an opportunity to rediscover their allure. In particular, the "Picture Scroll of Both Banks of the Sumida River" will be exhibited with different sections shown between the first and second terms. The first term features works such as "Peonies and Butterfly," "Fisherman," "One Hundred Ghost Stories: Kohada Koheiji," and "One Hundred Ghost Stories: The Dish Mansion," while the second term features "Hawk on a Cherry Branch," "A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces: Yoshitsune Horse-Washing Waterfall at Yoshino in Washu," "Kusunoki Masashige as a Youth with Tsunehisa, the Bettō of Yao," and "A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces: Kirifuri Waterfall at Mount Kurokami in Shimotsuke." All of these works are painted by Katsushika Hokusai and held in the collection of The Sumida Hokusai Museum. It is an exhibition where visitors can enjoy the profound depth of Hokusai's art along with new discoveries.
