Itabashi Cultural Heritage Interaction Week 2026

About this event

The 21st "Itabashi Cultural Heritage Interaction Week 2026" will be held under the theme "Yes, Strata: This is Kami-Ita - Touching the Overlapping Layers of Time Living in the Present." The Kami-Itabashi area is where the Shakujii River, Kawagoe Kaido Road, and the Tobu Tojo Line intersect, and the "layers" of history and culture that have been pioneered and developed alongside rivers, roads, and railways are still alive today. Visitors will tour "places where time, people, and culture overlap," unique to this area where diverse forms of cultural properties born over the long passage of time are handed down, including archaeological sites, temples and shrines, folk beliefs, festival music (matsuri-bayashi), and hand-painted Yuzen dyeing (Tegaki Yuzen). At each open site, explanations by volunteer guides and curators, as well as the distribution of commentary cards and informational materials, will take place, providing a valuable opportunity to feel the connection between past and present, as well as the unique layering of eras and culture in the Kami-Itabashi area. In particular, in the Kami-Itabashi district, a wide variety of events are scheduled, such as open rehearsals by the Kanda-style Shinmei-bayashi Preservation Society, special public viewings of the Moro Ruins, Anyoin Temple, Sakuragawa Mitake Shrine, and Tokiwadai Tenso Shrine, open rehearsals by the Kanda-style Yayoi-bayashi Preservation Society, and exhibitions and workshops of Tegaki Yuzen. In the Tegaki Yuzen workshop, participants can also enjoy making a handkerchief (participation fee 3,000 yen, first 6 people per session on a first-come, first-served basis).
