Mount Mihara Mountain Marathon

Held in the Mount Mihara and Urasabaku Desert areas of Izu Oshima, the "Mount Mihara Mountain Marathon" is a unique competition that tests navigation skills using a map and compass. Unlike the Izu Oshima Rogaining Competition held on the previous day, this event is held as a 3-hour mini-competition within a narrow competition area focused around Mount Mihara. The challenging terrain, which features almost no trails and numerous micro-topographical features, is well known for attracting orienteering athletes from across the country. Two course options are available: the "Straight Class," where checkpoints are visited in order, and the "Score Class," where checkpoints are visited in any chosen order within the time limit. Using original maps based on Geospatial Information Authority of Japan topographic maps, top orienteers set up challenging checkpoints. It is truly a competition that puts participants' navigation skills to the test. You can challenge your own skills while enjoying the powerful volcanic lava terrain and spectacular views looking out over the sea from the mountain.
