About this event

The Museum of Poetry in Stars and Forest (Hoshi to Mori no Uta Museum) opened on October 1, 1996, and celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. To celebrate this milestone and express gratitude for the many encounters over the years, a collection exhibition featuring the museum's permanent holdings will be held. This exhibition displays works essential to the museum, such as Joichi Hoshi's woodblock print "Blue Tree" (Aoi Ki), which inspired the founding of the museum collection; Shoji Amada's "Seven Star Sword" (Shichiseiken), which took 7 years to craft; and outdoor sculptures realized through the encounter with Hidemasa Fujimaki. Furthermore, a curated selection of masterpieces will be on display: Japanese swords ranging from ancient swords (koto) to modern swords (gendaiko); sculptures co-starring works by Katsuzo Entsuba, Fujimaki's mentor; prints featuring Umetaro Azechi, whom Hoshi admired, Tadashi Nakayama, known for brilliant woodblock prints, and hand-painted yuzen works by Iwao Yamazaki, who interacted with Hoshi in Tokamachi. The exhibition title originates from a poem composed by the museum representative describing the name and scenery of the museum: "Stars in heaven, woods on earth, poetry in the human heart" (Ten ni hoshi, chi ni wa mori, hito no kokoro ni uta ga ari), carrying the wish that the museum remains a place where visitors can continue to experience these sentiments upon reaching the 30-year milestone. A special campaign with free admission will also be held on the opening anniversary date of Thursday, October 1.
