Jike Kiriko Festival

Held annually on the second Saturday of September throughout the Jike area of Misaki-machi, Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, the 'Jike Kiriko Festival' is the autumn annual festival of Susu Shrine. It is famous for four massive all-lacquered Kiriko lantern floats, measuring between 14 and over 16 meters in height, parading along coastal roads in the Jike district. Among them, the largest Kiriko is made of the prefectural tree, Hiba arborvitae (Ate), stands 16.5 meters tall, weighs 4 tons, and has a roof the size of 12 tatami mats. A 2-shaku (approx. 60 cm) shachihoko ornament is placed on top, and the pillars, beams, and roof are adorned with lacquer and gold leaf decorations, with carvings such as dragons on various parts, creating a magnificent and powerful appearance. At night, the lights of the gigantic Kiriko flicker among the waves as they parade leisurely, creating a fantastical scene. This festival is an important form of faith handed down by local people as the 'pride of our town' and is renowned for featuring some of the largest Kiriko floats in Japan.
