About this event

In Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, the production of "goza" (rush mats) woven from igusa (rush grass) was thriving, primarily in the Shikatani district. In this special exhibition, you can learn about the history of Katsuyama, which is known not only for goza mats but also as a production center of rush products such as "goza hats" made from processed goza. Through panel displays and hands-on experiences, the world of goza weaving will be introduced, including what kind of looms were used to weave goza and what it feels like to wear a goza hat. As related events, hands-on goza weaving experiences and a lecture focusing on the imushiro (rush mats) among the treasures of Todai-ji Temple's Shosoin repository will also be held. Through this opportunity, you can gain a deeper understanding of the skills and history of goza weaving, a traditional local industry.
