About this event

The Autumn Special Exhibition "The Tale of Kaiki Silk (Kaiki Monogatari)" held at the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum focuses on "Kaiki," a domestic silk fabric adapted from imported "kaiki" textiles brought by Dutch and Portuguese ships. It introduces the history and appeal of Kaiki silk, which gained fame as a local specialty of Yamanashi Prefecture during the Meiji period, but became a phantom textile after production ceased in the early Showa period. This exhibition positions Kaiki silk as the beginning of individual expression in modern everyday clothing, portraying how garment linings incorporating diverse Japanese and Western designs discreetly nurtured people's "individuality." Featuring homecoming exhibits of Kaiki silk pieces that had circulated outside the prefecture, it is the largest Kaiki exhibition ever, showcasing over 100 items including haori coats and fabric samples. Visitors can enjoy designs that fuse traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.
