Sueyozaemon Kiln Firing

Japanese name:陶与左衛門窯 焼成

📅 Fri, Sep 18, 2026 - Tue, Sep 22, 2026

📍 Mizunami, Gifu

About this event

The once-a-year firing will take place at the "Sueyozaemon Kiln," a six-chamber climbing kiln located in Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture. The fire-lighting ceremony starts at 9:00 AM on Friday, September 18, 2026 (Reiwa 8), and extinguishing the fire is scheduled for Tuesday (national holiday), September 22, 2026 (Reiwa 8). During the firing period, as "Firewood of Hope," you can write your dreams, hopes, and resolutions onto firewood and toss it into the kiln with your own hands (300 yen cooperation fee). Unloading the kiln to remove the fired pieces is scheduled to take place from 9:00 AM on Sunday, September 27, 2026 (Reiwa 8). This traditional firing is sustained by the passion of townspeople and volunteers who keep feeding firewood day and night. Highlights include not only the power of the kiln during the day, but also the beauty of the flames standing out against the darkness during nighttime firewood feeding work. Viewing is free, so please take this opportunity to experience the pottery culture of Sue Town.
