Shirakawa-go Doburoku Festival
Japanese name:白川郷 どぶろく祭
📅 Wed, Oct 14, 2026 - Thu, Oct 15, 2026
About this event
Considered the most important annual event in Shirakawa-go, this autumn rite is a world-renowned unique festival where prayers are offered to the mountain deities for bumper crops and the safety of the household. Its greatest feature is the serving of doburoku (unrefined sake) brewed at the shrine to worshippers, accompanied by a sacred palanquin procession (goshinko gyoretsu), lion dances, and dedications of folk songs and dances. It is a ritual that has been passed down through a long history at shrines across the village, centered on Shirakawa Hachiman Shrine. Since the distribution of doburoku begins in the afternoon, visitors are recommended to arrive with plenty of time to spare.
