Standing Tree Shakyamuni Memorial Service
Japanese name:立木釈尊供養祭
📅 Sun, Nov 1, 2026
About this event
A statue of Shakyamuni Buddha was carved into a standing pine tree over a century old at the scenic viewpoint "Fujimidai" in Nishi-Izu, where it was deeply revered by the local community. After the tree died due to pine wilt nematode pests, it was felled, treated with resin, and enshrined inside a small shrine. Every year, a memorial and prayer service is held with the cooperation of the local Ryusenji Temple and the Daimokuko Buddhist group to pray for the travel safety of tourists and a thriving influx of visitors to Toi Onsen.
