About this event

This special exhibition focuses on the various efforts people have made from ancient times to the modern era to maintain beautiful black hair. Along with considerations for diet and daily life, it introduces the hair-binding culture that flourished from the Edo period onward, as well as various hairstyles reflecting the trends of each era. It also traces the transition from the "zangiri-atama" (cropped hair) following the Hair-cutting Edict after the Meiji Restoration, to the appearance of new hairstyles such as perms and short bob cuts among women during the Taisho and Showa periods, where hair became a means of expressing individuality. Incorporating materials from the Anjo City collection, this exhibition presents the history of hairstyles, hair ornaments, and hair care, exploring the timeless interest in hair and the rich cultural history it weaves.
