About this event
The Noda Amagoi Kasa Odori Festival is a traditional festival passed down at Noda Hachimangu Shrine since 1712 (Shotoku 2) as a ritual praying for rain. Dancers perform in pairs facing each other across a drum, holding short drumsticks called "tsutsuro." Dressed in yukata with red sashes (tasuki) and wearing flat sedge hats (ichimonji sugegasa), the dancers' highlight is energetically swinging their glamorous red-and-white adorned sedge hats. While dancing to rainmaking songs and purification chants, they beat the drums and the backs of the drums. The dance follows a traditional sequence: "Ba-narashi," "Sanbyoshi," "Sasara," "Aya," and "Osame." Expressing the earnest prayers of farmers from bygone eras, this simple and charming festival was designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kariya City in 1984 (Showa 59).
