About this event
The Akiba Festival is held every year on a Sunday in mid-September within the grounds of Chiryu Shrine in Chiryu City, Aichi Prefecture. During the daytime, young men from six districts of the city (Takaramachi, Yamamachi, Yamayashikicho, Nakashinmachi, Honmachi, and Nishimachi) carry wooden ball boxes (tamabako) and parade vigorously through each district while singing nagamochi-uta songs. In the evening, they make a grand entry into Chiryu Shrine, where heroic hand-held cylinder fireworks (tezutsu hanabi) are presented. Spectators can admire distinctive fireworks such as approximately 260 hand-held fireworks, randama rapid-fire balls, and set-piece fireworks. In particular, the sight of people holding hand-held fireworks over 7 meters high with both hands while standing in a circle to launch them overwhelms onlookers. The festival typically attracts around 1,500 visitors each year.
