About this event
As part of "Mie Museum Seminar 2026" held at the Mie Center for the Arts (Mie Prefectural Lifelong Learning Center), the Saiku Historical Museum will hold a seminar titled "The Tale of Kyo's Saio and Kamo Saiin." This seminar is a lecture related to the special exhibition "Dai-Saiin" held this autumn by the Saiku Historical Museum in Meiwa Town. Welcoming Yoko Sasada from the Saiku Historical Museum as the lecturer, the seminar will explain the Saio—unmarried imperial princesses who served at Ise Jingu on behalf of the Emperor—as well as the Kamo Saiin, another type of priestess selected starting in the Heian period. In particular, focusing on Imperial Princess Senshi ("Dai-Saiin"), who spent 57 years as the Kamo Saiin and interacted with Fujiwara no Michinaga and Murasaki Shikibu, the seminar delves into the story of the Kamo Saiin as standard-bearers of court culture. In addition to attending at the venue, on-demand streaming on YouTube will be available, allowing viewing from home at any preferred time. Related panel exhibitions will also be held at the venue, offering an opportunity to experience the history and culture of Saiku alongside the seminar.
