About this event
Boasting a history of over 390 years, the Tsu Matsuri is a grand traditional festival in Mie Prefecture. It originated in 1635 (Kanei 12) when the second feudal lord, Todo Takatsugu, designated it as the festival for the tutelary deity of Hachiman Shrine. The festival bustles with large crowds as a nationally rare celebration blending the old and the new, featuring long-passed-down traditional performing arts such as Tojin Odori, Shagouma, Hachiman Shishimai, and Irie Waka-bayashi, alongside Takatora Taiko, the Japanese-style ship float Anotsu-maru, and the Anotsu Yosakoi dance, which began in 1998 (Heisei 10). As a festival celebrated by all citizens, it is packed with highlights including numerous local performing arts dances, powerful Anotsu Yosakoi performances, and many street food stalls lining the town.
