Omura Shrine Annual Autumn Festival
Japanese name:大村神社 例祭
📅 Mon, Nov 2, 2026 - Tue, Nov 3, 2026
About this event
This is the annual festival held at Omura Shrine in Iga City, Mie Prefecture. During the Yoimiya eve on the 2nd, the Shishimai (lion dance / Shishi Kagura) dedicated by various districts remains lively until late at night. In addition, an Onamazu (giant catfish) floral float appears to liven up the autumn festival. The "Kaname-ishi" (keystone) enshrined at Omura Shrine is said to suppress the giant catfish that brings earthquakes, making the shrine famous as the "God of Earthquakes." Placing a giant catfish modeled after the stone catfish placed in front of this keystone onto a floral float and parading it through the town of Ao alongside portable shrines (mikoshi) is truly a magnificent sight. The shrine's treasure hall is designated as a National Important Cultural Property, and the festival is carried out within this historical atmosphere.
