About this event

The 'Shirashige Festival (Naruko Mairi),' held annually on September 5 and 6 at Shirahige Shrine, is a traditional Shinto ritual handed down at Shirahige Shrine, the oldest grand shrine in Omi. In particular, 'Naruko Mairi' is a ritual passed down from ancient times in which a 2-year-old child (by traditional Japanese age reckoning) is given a name before the altar, and by calling that name for three days, prayers are offered for the child's healthy growth and longevity. Shinto priests perform prayers, and sacred kagura dance accompanied by the melodies of flutes and drums is also dedicated. During the festival period, famous street stalls line the shrine grounds, bustling with many people. From 3:00 PM on the second day, the Yudate ritual is also performed, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of a traditional festival. It is scheduled to be held next year as well, and many worshippers are expected to visit.
