About this event
Held annually at Sōguri Shrine in Sayama, Kumiyama Town, Kyoto Prefecture, the Hassaku Festival is a traditional festival praying for bountiful harvests and the warding off of epidemics. In connection with Hassaku Day (the 1st day of the 8th lunar month), sacred food offerings are presented during Shinto rituals to divine the success or failure of that year's rice field crops. In the evening, many stalls line the shrine grounds, offering yakisoba, takoyaki, fried chicken, lotteries, bouncy ball scooping, and more. Bustling with families and children, it is cherished as a late-summer tradition. In the past, it was beloved by many as the grand finale event of the summer vacation. While there were recent years when only Shinto rituals were held due to the impact of the novel coronavirus, the stalls have returned, showing even greater liveliness than usual years.
